Below you’ll find your required coursework and important details regarding your certification. This course includes presentations, quizzes, online labs, and lab practical exams with an instructor to help you perfect your technique!
The online labs are available for learning and practicing your technique. You will need your volunteer during online labs and practical exams. Once you can complete the sequence presented in an online lab within 25 minutes, you can take your Practical Exam to be graded and receive one-on-one personal feedback from your instructor.
(Also referred to as “Lab Practical Exams”, “Practicals", or "Exams" )
You’re expected to schedule your practical exams with an instructor throughout the duration of this certification course. All exams must be scheduled at least 1 day in advance.
If you’re testing alone, you’re allotted a total of 1 hour per exam to be tested and get feedback from an instructor. REMEMBER: For each exam, you’re expected to complete the sequence you practiced in the online lab within 25 minutes by memory. Your instructor will not prompt you throughout the exam, but will offer helpful feedback at the end of testing. At the end of each exam, your instructor will either pass you or request you retest by scheduling that specific exam again.
After clicking “Start Your Certification”, you can visit the “Schedule An Exam” page to look at estimated times for both your online labs and practical exams and to schedule exams in advance.
Your online coursework must be completed in full and you will need to achieve a minimum score of 80% on assessments to pass each lesson and earn your certification.
Your volunteer will need to wear comfortable clothing that’s able to expose the shoulder, thoracic spine, and scapular area. Suitable items include: a one-piece bathing suit with a low backline, a stretchy camisole where both straps could be comfortably taken down, or a bikini top with shoulder straps. A racer-back sports bra or bathing suit would not work.
Your volunteer will need elastic-waist shorts that are loose enough to be pulled up over the greater trochanter and also pulled down to expose the lumbar spine and sacrum for treatment.

If you are planning to get Astym Certified by yourself, then yes, you will need to recruit a healthy volunteer. It does not need to be the same person throughout all the online labs and practical exams. Your volunteer is needed for your online labs and practical exams with an instructor. Your volunteer may be a friend, coworker, spouse, relative, or another clinician also taking the virtual course.
If you choose another clinician getting Astym Certified through the virtual course as your lab partner, please be sure you BOTH have completed the necessary coursework/quizzes prior to scheduling a practical exam with an instructor. ONLY ONE of you will need to schedule each practical exam. REMEMBER: the name of your partner must be added to the practical exam when scheduling.
You can choose to plan ahead by scheduling your exams in advance or you can wait until you’re prompted within the coursework. All exams must be scheduled at least 1 day in advance.
You will need your volunteer for these exams so please choose a time that works best with this in mind.

After you click “Start Your Certification,” you’ll see a section where you can schedule your exams ahead of time or view your exam schedule. (NOTE: If you haven’t scheduled an exam with an instructor, your schedule will be empty until you schedule an exam.)
Not necessarily. However, we want you to receive personalized feedback from our highly-trained instructors as soon as possible after completing your online lab so that any technique errors can be corrected before they become too ingrained.
No. Several of our instructors are available during the work week for your practical exams. The course outlines the order of your exams and we’ve listed how long it typically takes to go through the online lab and take the exam for each body segment.

No. You can schedule with any instructor available! We want you to have control of your own exam schedule so you can find times that are most convenient to you.
You have the option to reschedule or cancel your exams after you click “See My Schedule” which will list any exams you’ve already scheduled.
To cancel or reschedule an exam, click the pencil icon next to your exam and select the option you’d like. (You can cancel or reschedule an exam with the same instructor up to 1 hour prior to that exam.)
Once you successfully complete your virtual certification course, there will be an option to download or print your Astym certificate.
